Your download speed is only half the story. Online games, video calls and remote desktops depend on low ping (how fast the connection reacts) and low jitter (how steady it is). This free test sends 20 tiny requests to three servers around the world and shows your ping, jitter and packet loss for each — in about 15 seconds.
How to test ping and jitter
- Close downloads, streaming and video calls on your network.
- Click "Start ping test".
- Watch the bars: each bar is one request; red bars are lost requests.
- Read ping, jitter and packet loss for each server and the overall rating.
What the results mean
- Ping (latency): the time for a message to go to the server and back. Under 30 ms is excellent, 30–60 ms good, 60–120 ms OK, above 150 ms you will notice delay.
- Jitter: how much the ping changes from one request to the next. Under 5 ms is excellent; above 30 ms makes voice and video choppy.
- Packet loss: requests that never came back. Anything above 1–2 % causes freezes, rubber-banding in games and robotic voices in calls.
- Different servers give different results — the nearest server (Cloudflare) shows the quality of your own connection best.
Why ping matters more than speed for gaming
A 20 Mbps connection with 15 ms ping feels much faster in games than a 500 Mbps connection with 120 ms ping. Speed decides how quickly big files download; ping and jitter decide how quickly the game reacts to you.
Not working? Try this
- High ping: use a network cable instead of Wi-Fi, or move closer to the router. Wi-Fi through walls adds delay and jitter.
- High jitter: other people on your network may be streaming or downloading. Pause updates and try again.
- Packet loss: restart your router and modem; if it continues, contact your internet provider with your results.
- VPN on: a VPN sends traffic through another country and adds ping. Turn it off to see your normal result.
- Ping is fine but games lag: choose a game server in your region in the game settings.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good ping?
Under 30 ms is excellent for competitive gaming, under 60 ms is good, and under 100 ms is fine for video calls and casual games.
What is jitter?
Jitter is the variation in ping between requests. Low jitter means a steady connection; high jitter makes calls choppy and games stutter.
Is this a real ping (ICMP)?
Web browsers cannot send ICMP ping packets, so the test measures the round-trip time of tiny web requests over an open connection. The results are very close to what games and calls experience.
How can I lower my ping?
Use a wired connection, close downloads and streaming, turn off VPNs, and choose game servers close to you.
