Files open when you only wanted to select them? Items drop while dragging? Your mouse switch may be "chattering" — sending two clicks when you press once. This test measures the exact time between clicks and flags clicks that come faster than any human can click, so you know for sure whether the mouse is faulty.
How to test for double-click problems
- Choose the button to test (left button is the usual suspect).
- Click slowly inside the box, about 30–50 times, as you normally would.
- Watch "Faulty double-clicks": any number above 0 means the switch is bouncing.
- Double-click on purpose to see your double-click speed in milliseconds.
What the results mean
- Single clicks: normal clicks with a pause between them.
- Double-clicks: two clicks inside your double-click speed (500 ms is the Windows default).
- Faulty double-clicks: a second click that starts less than 80 ms after the first one — too fast to be you. This is switch chatter.
- Fastest double-click: how quickly you double-click; most people are between 100 and 250 ms.
Why mice start double-clicking
Inside every mouse button is a tiny metal switch. Over time the contact wears or oxidises and "bounces", so one press is read as two. Gaming mice used heavily and cheap mice in dusty places are most affected. Some mice with optical switches don't have this problem.
Not working? Try this
- Clean the button: blow compressed air around the button edges while pressing it.
- Update or reinstall the mouse software; some (Logitech, Razer) have a "debounce time" setting — raise it slightly.
- Check Windows settings: Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse → Additional mouse settings → Double-click speed.
- Still faulty? Use the warranty, or replace the switch if you are comfortable with soldering.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my mouse is double-clicking?
Click slowly in the test box 30–50 times. If "Faulty double-clicks" shows any number above zero, the mouse sends extra clicks by itself.
What is a normal double-click speed?
Most people double-click in 100–250 ms. Windows treats two clicks within 500 ms as a double-click by default.
Can a double-clicking mouse be fixed?
Sometimes — cleaning or raising the debounce time can help. A worn switch needs to be replaced.
Can I test the right button too?
Yes. Choose "Right button" or "Middle" at the top of the test.
